Disobedient Landscapes
March 5th - May 30th, 2021

DISOBEDIENT LANDSCAPES

'Disobedient Landscapes' is a celebration of the unforeseen, by Liza Grobler. These paintings and fibre works, created between June 2020 and January 2021, are propositions for an environment that is temporal and in flux. Whilst traditional landscape painting provides a constructed view of space, 'Disobedient Landscapes' offers a multitude of options, with no ordered conclusion. It does not adhere to the conventions of landscape painting. There is no sign of a horizon.

At a time when our globally constructed physical and emotional landscapes are transforming behond our wildest imagination, 'Disobedient Landscapes' offers a glimpse from within this landscape. One can see details and intuitively sense aspects, but it is a difficult position from which to reflect on the picture as a whole. It is begging to be experienced, rather than rationally analyzed. It is a search for new routes, not a destination in itself. The viewer is invited to be an active participant, searching for their own way within these works. It is a process of 'moving through' rather than 'arriving at'.

Navigate the paintings like you navigate the current landscape: with caution, hope, a renewed lust for life and pause where and when you choose.
