BREATHE, KEEP BREATHING

Apparent freedom
Here in the free West, we live in a world where everything is possible, opportunities are there for the taking, opportunities that must be seized in order to get the most out of life.
Freedom within frameworks, legal, moral. Legacies of the Catholic institute that uses guilt as an instrument to force us within the lines.
Pandemics, wars and climate threats hang over our heads like invisible threats.
Problems that we share with all of humanity.
Searching for relief in small things. A walk with the dog, who is not allowed to run free, only within the demarcated area of a dogyard. Here you may breathe, my dear dog. Just for a little while. For him too: freedom within limits. What on earth are we doing?
The fight is in your head, where they say real freedom is. Sometimes it has to come out, a scream, resistance. Sometimes peace comes. Is it freedom or is it surrender?

BERT DAENEN

As the son of a photographer, Bert Daenen grew up with the smell of the darkroom in the house, watching his father work in his studio. His interest in portrait photography soon became apparent during his training at the art academy. After years as a commercial photographer, the passion for portrait photography got him back in its grip. In recent years, Bert has worked intensively on developing his own style, looking for the ‘pure’ portrait.
At the age of 52, his cabinet is too small to display all his international trophies. Earlier this year, the Tongeren based visual artist exhibited at Imagination in Paris and at Photofair in Rotterdam. With his series ‘Behind the mask’ he gained international interest by portraying in a unique way nurses and doctors in times of corona.
